Comfort Colors 1717 Fit: Measure a Shirt You Already Like

Comfort Colors 1717 has a relaxed fit, but the most useful size reference is a shirt you already enjoy wearing. Measure that garment, compare the same measurement points with the product's current size guide, and decide whether you want similar room or a deliberately oversized look.

A familiar letter size is a starting point, not a fit guarantee across brands. A few minutes with a tape can tell you more than trying to judge a shirt from a model photograph.

Start with the fit you want

Comfort Colors describes the 1717 as a relaxed-fit tee with a tubular body and garment-dyed, ring-spun fabric. That identifies its construction; it does not tell you exactly how it will sit on your body.

Our Built Different tee uses that blank. For an everyday fit, choose a reference shirt you like for ordinary wear. For a roomier gym or pump-cover look, use a shirt that already has the extra room you want. Do not automatically add a size simply because someone else did.

If you are buying for another lifter, confirm their fit preference first. Our powerlifting gift guide covers the other details worth checking without spoiling the whole surprise.

Measure the garment, not the person

The Built Different guide uses garment measurements. A chest-width number taken across a shirt lying flat is not the same as a tape measurement around your chest.

  1. Choose a reliable reference. Use a clean, dry shirt that fits the way you want. Avoid comparing a stretched-out garment with a new one.
  2. Lay it flat. Smooth the fabric gently without pulling it wider or longer. Keep the tape straight rather than following folds.
  3. Record chest width. For the method shown on our product page, measure straight across the shirt one inch below the armhole.
  4. Record body length. Measure from the high point of the shoulder to the finished back hem, using the product guide's stated method.
  5. Keep the units consistent. Compare inches with inches or centimeters with centimeters. Do not mix a flat width, a body circumference and a length in the same comparison.

Use this quick fit worksheet

Copy these prompts into your notes. Fill the product column from the exact shirt and size you are considering; this is not a numerical manufacturer size chart.

Your reference shirt compared with the intended purchase
Check Your reference shirt Candidate size
Flat chest width and units Write your measurement Record the listed measurement
Body length and units Write your measurement Record the listed measurement
Room and coverage wanted What already feels right? What would change?

Consider width and length together. A wider option can also change coverage and proportions. If the listed measurements do not make sense beside your reference, ask before ordering rather than guessing from the size letter.

Preshrunk still calls for proper care

Comfort Colors says its garments are preshrunk during dyeing and washing. That is not a promise of zero change under every laundry routine. Follow the care label and any instructions for the printed design; do not use heat as a sizing strategy.

Make the final choice on the current product page

Check the exact color, selected size and availability before adding the shirt. Use its current guide instead of carrying measurements over from another style. The goal is a deliberate fit choice, not the biggest size by default.
